Music Up Hood Down - Where it began

Music Up Hood Down

Music has always been one of those things that brings people together.

Hi, I’m Jonny. Welcome to Music Up Hood Down.

My love for music started early. I still remember winning my first CD player at church — even though I didn’t own a single CD yet. That came later, thanks to a McDonald’s Happy Meal promo and a Tina Turner CD. I wore that thing out. I read the lyrics, learned everything I could, and realized something important… I wanted my own music.

From there it snowballed. Radio stations, MTV, TRL, and one lucky find — a Blink-182 Enema of the State CD in the gutter that somehow still worked. That sealed the deal. I was hooked.

The real turning point came when I walked into my local record store, Bionic Records, with a pocketful of change and walked out with three cassette tapes: Nirvana, Social Distortion, and AFI. I listened to them nonstop. A used Walkman later, I was skating around town with music in my ears and zero cares.

As I got older and started working, music became an obsession. I collected everything — vinyl, cassettes, CDs, demos — to the point where my bedroom basically turned into a record store. Eventually, listening wasn’t enough. I started playing drums, joined bands, played shows, even hit Warped Tour (not great… but it counts). Music was life.

Then life shifted. I moved to Pittsburgh, got married, had kids, and music took a back seat — for all the right reasons.

Now things have come full circle. I’m a husband, father, welder, fabricator, and metal artist — and music is back in the foreground. My shop is always playing something loud. Music fills our house. Even the shower is a mini concert. Best of all, I get to share music with my kids… whether they like my picks or not.

Which brings us to Music Up Hood Down. It started as a sticker — a phrase that perfectly summed up how I work and who I am. Welding became a huge part of my identity, and it only made sense to blend it with music. As I paid more attention, I realized how many welders are also musicians. So I started making a list… then a playlist.

This isn’t music about welding.
This is music made by welders.

That gap needed filled — so I filled it.
